Chlorination with Chlorine

Chlorine is used as a chlorination reagent for the chlorination of carbonyl functional compounds, benzylic positions as well as aromats. Reactions can be carried out either with liquid or gaseous chlorine in loop or batch reactors. Chlorine is also used for the oxidation of thiols or thioethers to sulfonyl chlorides or sulfones.

Reaction scheme

Strengths

- on-site production and captive use of chlorine
- continuous and batch reactions
- recycling of HCl
